Kael'thas "Kael" Sunstrider was a senior member of the Kirin Tor and the Prince of Quel'Thalas, the last of the Sunstrider dynasty. After the fall of Quel'Thalas, Kael'thas led what remained of his people in the service of the Alliance. Striving to placate his people's addiction to magic, he later covertly allied with Illidan Stormrage, the Naga and the Burning Legion. He was branded a traitor after his allegiance with the Legion was revealed. Kael'thas plotted to summon Kil'jaeden through the Sunwell, but his plans were foiled by the Shattered Sun Offensive. He was defeated by their forces in Magisters' Terrace.

Design questions & concepts

- Kael has an unprecedented amount of information regarding his abilities and nature. Whereas an unknown/unseen character offers a lot of design space and thematic leeway, Kael does the exact opposite - with so many iconic hallmarks to hit, heresy is at the door if it was elected to build the hero's kit from scratch.

- This design is loosely based on the Tempest Keep raid fight.

- The weapon-set-based design allows to not only represent one of the coolest aspect of the fight, but also, to account for Kael's high number of thematic hallmarks.

- It also sets a precedent for a new design playstyle, which focuses on weapon "swapping", adaptation and cooldown management.

- Abilities-wise, his all-powerful-magi-ness is represented by the wide array of abilities at his disposal. Many of which are basic martial weapon-related concepts that have been enhanced by magic; they greatly improve his mastery of such, despite being a scholar.

Skills


Trait: Arcane Arsenal
Cooldown: 20 seconds

You may equip one of the following weapons:

    -Staff of Disintegration, which causes your Basic Attacks to deal area of effect damage. Default weapon.

    -Netherstrand Longbow, which causes your Basic Attacks to apply a stacking damage-over-time effect and increases your base range by 1.

    -Infinity Blades, which improve your attack speed by 50% but decreases your base range by 4.

The equipped weapon determines your Basic Abilities. Using Basic Abilities consumes your Arcane Power.

Summoning a new weapon replenishes your Arcane Power.

Staff of Disintegration skills

Skill I (Q): Fireball
Costs 10 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 3 seconds

Launch a slow-moving fireball that deals X damage in an area when it enters in contact an enemy entity.




Skill II (W): Flame Strike
Costs 20 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 8 seconds

After a short delay, deal X damage to enemies in the target area. The flames persist for Y seconds, dealing Z damage per second. Deals an additional 100% damage to Structures.




Skill III (E): Gravity Lapse
Costs 30 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 15 seconds

Magically suppress gravitation in the target area, allowing units to move over terrain and obstacles unhindered for 3 seconds.

Netherstrand Longbow skills

Skill I (Q): Arcane Shot
Costs 10 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 3 seconds

Shoot a piercing arcane arrow that returns to you, dealing X damage.




Skill II (W): Verdant Spheres
Costs 20 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 8 seconds

Summon 3 verdant spheres to orbit around you for X seconds. The spheres home onto nearby enemies, dealing Y damage. Multiple spheres can hit a single target and prioritize Heroes.




Skill III (E): Banish
Costs 30 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 12 seconds

Target entity becomes Ethereal, reducing its Movement Speed by 25%, rendering it immune to Basic Attacks but unable to attack, and causing it to take 33% more damage and healing from Abilities for 1.5 seconds. Duration and effect are increased by 200% against Minions and Mercenaries.

Infinity Blades skills

Skill I (Q): Sliver
Costs 10 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 3 seconds

Empower your blades to cause your next 3 Basic Attack to deal 50% more damage. Changes your Attack Type to Ability until all 3 attacks have been delivered.




Skill II (W): Molten Armor
Costs 20 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 10 seconds

Molten lava engulfs you, causing X% of all damage taken to instead be dealt to nearby enemies, up to a limit of Y. Lasts 2 seconds.




Skill III (E): Blazing Speed
Costs 30 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 15 seconds

Gain 30% bonus movement speed for 5 seconds. Flames that deal Z damage per second linger where you move for the duration.

Heroic Skill I (R): Ashes of Al'ar
Cooldown: 100 seconds

Call forth Al'ar to crash upon target area, dealing X impact damage. Al'ar's ranged attacks deal Y damage. Its plumage burns with such intensity that it rapidly loses health while dealing Z damage per second to nearby enemies. Upon dying, Al'ara spawns a phoenix egg. If its egg is not killed, the cooldown of this ability is reset.

Heroic Skill II (R): Devastation
Cooldown: 80 seconds

Equip Devastation, which improves your Basic Attack damage by 100% and causes them to cleave in a 180˚ arc, but decreases your base range by 3.

The equipped weapon determines your Basic Abilities. Using Basic Abilities consumes your Arcane Power.

Equipping this weapon replenishes your Arcane Power.


Devastation skills

Skill I (Q): Devastate
Costs 10 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 3 seconds

Dash towards target area in a  whirlwind of fiery destruction, dealing X damage to enemies along the way, plus Y% for each 1% Health that they are missing.




Skill II (W): Pyroblast
Costs 20 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 6 seconds

Mark target enemy Hero from great range to cause a massive boulder of molten brimstone to home onto them after 3 seconds. Pyroblast hits the first enemy Hero or Structure it come in contact with, dealing X damage in a large area.




Skill III (E): Shock Barrier
Costs 30 Arcane Power
Cooldown: 15 seconds

Shield yourself, absorbing X damage for 8 seconds. If the shield is not depleted before expiring, it detonates, dealing Y damage to nearby enemies and knocking them back.

Trait: Verdant Spheres

Passive. Your Basic Abilities have no cooldown, but exhaust one of your Verdant Spheres when used.

Verdant Spheres individually regenerate every 10 seconds.

You can have up to 3 Verdant Sphere.
